Epic Universe - What to Know
What You Need to Know Before Visiting Universal’s Epic Universe
If you've been dreaming of racing through Donkey Kong’s Mine Cart or catching your breath after a close encounter in Dark Universe, you're not alone. Universal Orlando’s newest theme park, Epic Universe, is already turning heads, and making bucket lists, for families, thrill-seekers, and theme park lovers everywhere.
But this isn't just another addition to Universal’s lineup. Epic Universe is a game-changer, completely reimagined from the ground up. It plays by a different set of rules, and if you're used to how Universal Studios Florida or Islands of Adventure operate, you’ll want to know what sets this park apart before you dive in.
Let’s get into what you need to know to make the most of your day at Epic Universe, and how a little insider knowledge can turn a good day into an epic one.
Epic Universe Stands on Its Own (Literally)
Unlike Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure, which are connected by CityWalk, Epic Universe is in its own separate area. That means you’re not just strolling over from the other parks, you’ll need to plan ahead for how you’ll get there.
Universal is rolling out three brand-new hotels to make access a breeze:
Stella Nova Resort
Terra Luna Resort
Helios Grand Hotel
If you want to be right in the heart of the action, these are your go-to options. Helios Grand even has its own private entrance into Epic Universe (yes, really!). Stella Nova and Terra Luna are within walking distance, which means no waiting for a shuttle, no figuring out parking, and more time for fun.
Staying at one of Universal’s other resorts? No stress, complimentary shuttles will get you to and from Epic Universe seamlessly. While it’s not walkable from the original parks, Universal’s transportation system makes it easy to keep your focus where it should be: on the magic, not the logistics.
Smile! Facial Recognition Is Part of the Experience
Yes, you’ll still need a park ticket to get in, but once you’re inside, facial recognition technology is taking center stage. This especially comes into play with ride lockers, which are a must for most of the big thrill rides.
Here’s how it works: Instead of scanning your park ticket like you would at the other Universal parks, you’ll scan your face to access your locker. It’s quick, easy, and one less thing to fumble with. No more mid-loop panic attacks wondering if your ticket is still in your back pocket!
But here’s a tip: Use the lockers before doing the Darkmoor Monster Makeup Experience in Dark Universe. The facial recognition system might not recognize you if you’ve had a spooky transformation, so plan accordingly.
Every Land Feels Like a Whole New World
What makes Epic Universe so, well, epic, is how deeply immersive each land is. You’re not just visiting themed areas, you’re stepping into fully realized story worlds where every sight, sound, and smell transports you somewhere new.
Whether you're:
Soaring with dragons in the Isle of Berk
Playing your way through Super Nintendo World
Unlocking secrets in Wizarding World’s Ministry of Magic
Getting chills in the gothic halls of Dark Universe
…it all feels completely separate from the rest of the park and totally captivating.
Each land has its thrills, but not every area is go-go-go. There are quiet corners, open spaces, and lower-key attractions too. If you have little ones, or someone in your group is sensitive to sound or stimulation, it helps to know where these calm-down zones are. When I work with clients, I always make sure those details are woven into the itinerary to help keep the day balanced and enjoyable.
Express Pass Isn’t a Magic Wand Here
One of the most important things to know before your visit: Express Pass works differently at Epic Universe.
Yes, you can purchase an Express Pass to skip the lines, but some of the biggest attractions are NOT included, including:
Donkey Kong: Mine Cart Madness
Dragon Racers Rally
Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry
That means even with Express Pass, you’ll need to queue up in the regular line for these headline experiences. And if you're staying at a Universal Premier hotel (like Hard Rock, Portofino Bay, or Royal Pacific), the complimentary Unlimited Express benefit you’re used to at the other parks doesn’t apply here. You’ll need to purchase Express separately for Epic Universe.
So, is it worth it? If you’re trying to maximize your day and minimize waiting, absolutely. But just know it’s not a golden ticket for every ride, so we always build in smart planning to hit those must-dos at the right time of day.
Play Is Built Into the Park
Epic Universe isn’t just about the rides, it’s about interacting with the world around you in creative, playful ways.
In Super Nintendo World, the real star isn’t Mario, it’s the Power-Up Bands. These wearable wristbands let you:
Collect digital coins
Unlock interactive elements
Access mini-games
And even participate in the Bowser Jr. Challenge, which is only available if you’ve completed the earlier games
In the Wizarding World, interactive wands make a return. You can cast spells, activate magical effects, and feel like a true witch or wizard as you roam the shops and courtyards.
And in the Isle of Berk, it’s not just about the big rides. There are hidden surprises and playful, hands-on elements sprinkled throughout the land. Perfect for curious kids and grown-ups who love the details.
While none of these extras are required to have fun, they can make the day feel more personalized and immersive. I help families choose which experiences will bring the most value (and joy!) based on their interests and priorities.
